Police department enlists CodeBaby’s services to create a custom ‘virtual officer’ to assist citizens

Reno, Nev. (February 7, 2012) — Recently, The Reno Police Department introduced a custom-made ‘virtual officer’ developed to engage and assist citizens on the police department’s community-facing webpage. The interactive officer ensures that visits to the site are seamless and that crime reports are filed error-free.

To interact with the new tool, site visitors must simply click on the virtual officer found on the bottom right side of the department’s website.

With several thousand reports filed each month (online, in person, or on the phone), the department found itself spending valuable resources managing its lower-priority reporting processes. The department’s new virtual officer will increase the accuracy of the information transferred to its dispatch office, enabling better access to filings such as drug & homeland security tips, traffic issues and graffiti tagging. The technology also allows for reporting to be completed anonymously.

The department still urges citizens to call 9-11 for all life threatening emergencies.

“We have now identified a way to make it extremely interactive and error-free for citizens to report a crime to the police department as well as receive valuable and timely department information directly from Reno PD,” said Lieutenant Mohammad Rafaqat of the Reno Police Department.

In addition to making it easy and error-free for victims to report crimes, the virtual officer assists website visitors as they explore the department’s multimedia videos and photos, employment opportunities, community outreach and volunteering options as well as crime updates and frequently asked questions.

Reno Police Department’s virtual officer was developed by technology leader CodeBaby.

“We are very excited to see our virtual officer helping people in Reno, Nevada rid themselves of any worry when reporting a crime online,” said Dennis McGuire, CEO for CodeBaby. “We look forward to working with more police departments to replicate this process in order to aide more people across the United States report crimes online.”
